No more holding the phone at just the right angle — or turning the TV up louder than everyone else in the room wants it.
The phone rings, and for a half-second you think about letting it go to voicemail. Not because you don't want to talk to your daughter — because answering means fumbling to get the phone pressed just right against your ear, angling your head, asking her to repeat herself twice before you've even said hello.
Or maybe it's dinner with your spouse, TV on in the next room, and the volume that's "just right" for you is "way too loud" for everyone else in the house.
Here's what I tell patients almost every week: today's hearing aids can solve both of those problems, and most people have no idea the technology is already sitting on their ear. Many modern hearing aids can connect directly to your phone, your TV, and your music the same way wireless earbuds do — no separate gadget clipped to your shirt, no straining, no compromise on what everyone else in the room wants to hear. In this article, I'll walk you through what "Bluetooth hearing aids" actually means, what the research says really works, and what's worth asking about at your next visit.
What "Bluetooth Hearing Aids" Really Means
"Bluetooth hearing aids" is a bit of a catch-all term, so let's make it concrete. Many current hearing aids can pair directly with your smartphone — through Apple's "Made for iPhone" technology, Android's Auracast and ASHA streaming standards, or a manufacturer's own app — so that sound goes straight from your phone (or TV, or tablet) into your hearing aids as if they were a pair of wireless earbuds. There's no separate streamer to keep charged and clipped somewhere, which was the norm not too many years ago.
I work with several of the top manufacturers — Starkey, Unitron, Signia, and Phonak — and I'm not tied to any single one of them. That matters here because streaming capability, and exactly how it works with your particular phone, varies by brand and by how recent the technology is. It's not a "one type fits everyone" feature, which is exactly why I'd rather walk through it with you in person than have you guess from a brochure.
Phone Calls Without the Fumbling
Of everything Bluetooth connectivity does, streaming phone calls is usually the change patients notice fastest. Instead of holding the phone up to a microphone and hoping for the best, the call routes directly into both hearing aids at once — which turns out to matter for more than just convenience.
A 2024 study in the Journal of Audiology and Otology tested adults with moderate-to-severe hearing loss on phone conversations held in background noise, comparing wireless streaming on versus off. With streaming on, word recognition scores rose from an average of 30.0 to 39.1 (out of 50), and self-reported listening effort dropped from 85.5 to 72.5 on a 100-point scale — both statistically significant improvements.1
The same study found that people with stronger cognitive function tended to benefit even more from streaming, which is a good reminder that this isn't just a convenience feature — it's genuinely reducing how hard your brain has to work to follow a conversation.
That drop in listening effort is worth sitting with. A phone call that used to leave you mentally worn out can, for a lot of patients, start to feel almost ordinary again.
Music and TV: What the Research Actually Shows
TV streaming is the other feature patients ask about most — and here the research has an honest, slightly more nuanced answer than "it's always better."
A 2024 study in the American Journal of Audiology compared hearing aid users watching TV three ways: with standard hearing aids, with streaming and the hearing aid microphones partially reduced, and with streaming and the microphones fully muted.2 In a quiet room, streaming didn't add much benefit — participants did about as well either way. But in background noise, streaming with the microphones muted produced meaningfully better speech understanding and satisfaction than standard listening.
In plain terms: if you usually watch TV in a quiet room by yourself, streaming may feel like a nice-to-have rather than a game-changer. But if the TV competes with a running dishwasher, grandkids in the next room, or a spouse who talks through the good parts, streaming — with the settings adjusted correctly — is where it earns its keep.
Why This Isn't Just a Bell and Whistle
It's fair to wonder whether streaming features are more marketing than substance. The research on real-world hearing aid use suggests otherwise.
A 2023 study in the International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology found that when children's hearing aids were upgraded to include direct Bluetooth connectivity, average daily hearing aid use rose from 6.82 hours to 9.82 hours — a jump of three full hours a day.3 The researchers concluded that when hearing technology connects easily to the things people already use every day, people actually wear it more consistently.
I see the same pattern with my adult patients. Hearing aids that quietly integrate into daily life — answering a call, following a show, taking a work meeting — get worn far more consistently than devices that feel like one more piece of medical equipment to manage. And consistent daily use is one of the biggest factors in how much benefit you actually get from hearing aids over time.
Bluetooth Also Means Care Can Follow You
There's a quieter benefit to connected hearing aids that has nothing to do with music or phone calls: it changes what's possible for your ongoing care, too. Between Bluetooth-connected hearing aids, video calls, and FaceTime, I can often check in, troubleshoot, and make adjustments without you needing to drive in — especially valuable if getting to an appointment isn't easy some weeks.
Access to audiology care is a real barrier for a lot of people — the World Health Organization projects that roughly one in four people worldwide will experience some degree of hearing loss by 2050, even as audiologists remain in short supply in many regions.4 Researchers are now running controlled trials comparing remote, connectivity-based hearing aid adjustments to in-clinic visits, specifically to build evidence-based guidelines for when remote care can safely stand in for an office visit.5
To be clear: remote check-ins are a complement to your care, not a replacement for a proper in-person evaluation and fitting. But for the follow-up fine-tuning that happens over months and years, connectivity means good care doesn't always have to mean another trip to my office.

I'll be honest with you: I don't recommend every feature to every patient. Streaming isn't going to matter much if you rarely talk on the phone or you already hear the TV fine. But for the patients it's built for — the ones dreading another phone call, or feeling like they're the reason movie night got quiet — it can be one of the more meaningfully life-changing features in modern hearing technology, and it's often already available and simply not turned on.
